Stop Your Dog’s Destructive Behavior With This Trick!

The back tie is the most magical tool around for stopping destructive puppy behavior, and for preventing potty accidents in the house.  That’s because the puppy is learning to stay on place instead of exploring unsupervised territory and thus getting into trouble (chewing, ingesting objects and pottying in the house).

The back tie is simply a 6 foot nylon leash, or for stubborn chewers, you will want to get a chain leash.  Loop it through something sturdy, or use a carabiner clip and attach it to the leash handle then clip to something sturdy. The other end attaches to your dog’s collar.

Tips: Always supervise your dog when they are in a back tie. This is a temporary tool, and you will want to progress your dog (as he or she matures) to stay on place without the assistance of a back tie. This could take many months if you are inconsistent or if your puppy is very young. Be sure there is slack in the leash (it should not be too short that it confines the dog to place—this is a choking hazard).  Be sure there is enough leash so the dog can step off of place but cannot go off anywhere. The pup will learn that he/she has only one place to go—which is back to place.
