In order to prevent resource guarding, I train my puppies to release a high value item.
Often times with this type of treat, dogs go into a primal state of mind and will not willingly give up the item.
Put a collar and leash on your dog, give them the time and walk away. Give them a few minutes to work on it. Grab your leash (but do not apply pressure yet). Say “out” or “leave it” and then apply leash pressure to get the dog to release the item. Notice the leash pop on the second repetition—it’s an exaggerated form of pressure to get the dog tondrop the item. I only had to do this one time, and in the next rep you see Chloe drop the item without that leash pressure.
Take note that I am moving the dog away with the leash, until I no longer need it. At some point in this practice, the dog moves away on its own accord.
Practice this only a few times, and then remove the bully stick. Caveat—do not over- practice this with food bowls and other toys. Once the dog knows the command, you can practice it occasionally and when opportunities present themselves. Don’t harass your dog when they are eating—it’s annoying to them and unnecessary.
